Roscoe Village

Roscoe Village

TK's Thoughts:

Roscoe Village is a nice little gem tucked on the NW side. Taking a walk/drive down Roscoe always brings a smile to my face. The combination of shopping, restaurants and neighbors is unlike any other "strip" in the city.

Dimensions of the Neighborhood:

North Boundary: Addison

South Boundary: Belmont

West Boundary: Western

East Boundary: Ravenswood

Roscoe Village Information

Roscoe Village, Chicago’s “Village Within The City,” is a vibrant yet peaceful neighborhood located in the center of the city’s North Side. Home to over 6,200 residents, and site to some of the steadiest growth in all of the North Center community area, Roscoe Village’s tree-lined residential streets and core of shops and restaurants offer a thriving, community-oriented environment.

Located six miles northwest of the Loop, Roscoe Village is bound by Addison Street to the north, Belmont Avenue to the south, Ravenswood Avenue to the east and the Chicago River on the west.

Roscoe Village consists of both residential and commercial districts. The main retail area is on Roscoe Street, which bisects the neighborhood into northern and southern halves.

Public Amenities, Services, Civic Organizations

The Roscoe Village Chamber of Commerce is a nonprofit organization committed to representing Roscoe Village businesses in advancing the growth and prosperity of the Roscoe Village neighborhood.

The Chamber works together with neighborhood organizations, local schools, and the City of Chicago to present one of the most popular street festivals during the summer. During the first weekend in August, Retro On Roscoe sets up multiple stages for cover bands to play favorites from the '60s, '70s, and '80s. It's a free event, with donations encouraged to support the festival's continuing success.

Roscoe Village's Fellger Playlot Park is a safe and friendly park for kids to play and adults to relax on nearly an acre of playground with equipment and benches. During the summer, the sculptures inside the park become fountains of water for the children to splash in.

The Lincoln-Belmont Branch Library serves as the neighborhood’s public library.

Housing Stock

Single-family homes dominate many of the neighborhoods, although new construction in the form of three-story conventional walkups and duplexes are becoming quite common.

The average sales price for a one- or two-bedroom condo is around $340,000. Many of the neighborhood's loft-style condos have unique layouts with sale prices ranging from the $270s to mid-$300s for one-bedrooms, and up into the mid-$500s for a two-bedroom. Many newer construction single-family houses range from $1.5 to $3 million dollars, whereas older bungalow homes are typically valued from $500,000 & up.

Shopping, Dining and Nightlife

The charm of Roscoe Village is reflected in the dozens of local eateries and small shops that offer a variety of eclectic fare. Dining establishments have formed an enviable culinary clique including Mediterranean, South American, Thai and Italian cuisines, among many others. During the warmer months, diners can finish off their meals with a taste of Chicago’s best frozen custard from Scooter’s.

Charming boutiques and cool shops comprise an impressive array of goods and services, from beautiful clothing stores and eco-friendly home goods, to snazzy vintage garb and eclectic artwork.

Transportation

Public transportation is abundant in Roscoe Village. There are two CTA Brown Line stops, one at Paulina Street and the other at Addison Street. By taking the Belmont bus east from the neighborhood, you can reach the CTA’s Belmont station, where the Red, Brown, and Purple lines stop; westward buses eventually reach the Belmont Blue Line station in Avondale with access to O’Hare Airport. The Lincoln Avenue bus takes passengers directly to downtown Chicago. Street parking is available; a small portion of Roscoe Street is metered parking. Some areas require parking permit for the Chicago Cubs night games during the summer.

Schools

Roscoe Village offers many public and private schooling options including Audubon Elementary, Alexander Graham Bell Elementary School, Jahn Elementary School and Lane Tech High School.
